How Our Shrinky Dinks Kits Work
Draw or Trace
Use the included Shrinky Dinks colored pencils to draw or trace your favorite designs onto the Shrinky Dink paper. Be creative – the possibilities are endless!
Cut Out
Carefully cut out your designs using scissors. Make sure to leave a small border around each design for the best results.
Bake
Place your cut-out designs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Preheat your oven to the recommended temperature and bake your creations. Watch as they magically shrink and thicken in just a few minutes!
Create
Once cooled, your miniature designs are ready to be used! Turn them into beautiful Shrinky Dink jewelry, fun charms, or unique decorations.
Do not use microwave!
You should not use a Shrinky Dinks microwave method because microwaves heat unevenly, which can cause the plastic to warp, curl unpredictably, or melt unevenly. Shrinky Dinks are designed to be heated in a conventional oven where the heat is even, allowing the plastic to shrink uniformly. Using a microwave can also result in overheating, which may damage both the Shrinky Dinks and the microwave, potentially releasing harmful fumes.

Shrinky Dinks Tips
For best results, use fine-tip permanent markers or colored pencils, and always preheat your oven to the recommended temperature.
Precision and Detail
Fine-tip markers and colored pencils allow for greater precision and finer details in your designs. This is crucial because the shrinking process can make intricate details more pronounced. Using fine tips ensures your artwork remains clear and sharp even after shrinking.
Vibrant Colors
Permanent markers and high-quality colored pencils provide vibrant, long-lasting colors that do not fade or smudge during the baking process. This ensures your finished pieces are bright and visually appealing.
Less Bleeding
Fine-tip markers and colored pencils reduce the risk of color bleeding. This is important for maintaining clean lines and preventing colors from blending unintentionally, which can happen with broader or lower-quality markers.
Even Shrinkage
Preheating the oven ensures that the temperature is consistent and evenly distributed, allowing the Shrinky Dinks to shrink uniformly. This prevents uneven shrinkage, which can cause warping or distortion of your designs.
Optimal Hardening
The recommended temperature is carefully determined to ensure that the plastic sheets shrink to the right size and thickness. Baking at the correct temperature ensures that the plastic hardens properly, resulting in durable and sturdy finished pieces.
Preventing Over-Baking or Under-Baking
Baking at the right temperature for the specified time prevents over-baking, which can cause the plastic to become too brittle, and under-baking, which can result in insufficient shrinkage and weak structures. Preheating ensures that the plastic reaches the optimal state for durability and quality.
What Our Customers Have to Say
There used to be a character in the game ‘Candyland’ called ‘Plumpy,’ which my extended family learned during a Family Game night after my brother shared some trivia about The Chocolate Swamp not being the original name of that area of the Candyland board.
There used to be a character in the game ‘Candyland’ called ‘Plumpy,’ which my extended family learned during a Family Game night after my brother shared some trivia about The Chocolate Swamp not being the original name of that area of the Candyland board. No one could remember what it used to be called, so we asked Alexa who shared that it used to be The Molasses Swamp. Alexa then elaborated, sharing that the character ‘Plumpy’ was unceremoniously removed from the game in 2002 due to the belief that he promoted an unhealthy lifestyle. Not one of us had remembered Plumpy from our childhoods but upon hearing this, several of the adults laughed so hard at the name that they fell out of their chairs. So, of course, I decided to make ornaments for my family for Christmas: everyone gets one Plumpy and one Candyland kid because we are an immature bunch who never forgets when something funny happens.
Note #1 – I bought the ‘frosted’ shrinky dinks, and I really wish that I had bought the ‘crystal clear’ ones. That’s because I traced the outline of the characters, but I could only do it while holding everything up against a window on a very sunny day (otherwise, you can’t see what you’re trying to trace). If I had a light board, that would have made my life much easier. So: buy the crystal clear ones if you’re tracing something!
Note #2 – These shrink, alright. To be exact: they get about one-third smaller. The photos are the before & after, and in both pictures the characters are lying on a standard-size greeting card envelope. The colors really pop, too, after they’ve been shrunk.
Note #3 – If you need a hole (say, for threading some fishing wire to make an ornament) then be sure to use an actual hole puncher and punch that hole BEFORE you bake/shrink these. As you can see from the photos, I botched the ‘hole punch’ part because I used kitchen knife. I had left space at the ‘hand’ area of the characters for a small hole, but all I did was slice/split the material. I thought that I could instead punch them after they’ve been shrunken/baked. I cannot – they’re way too thick now. So now they’re very tiny bookmarks.

I’m a teacher and had my kids make shrinky dink keychains for Father’s Day. They turned out AMAZING!
I’m a teacher and had my kids make shrinky dink keychains for Father’s Day. They turned out AMAZING!
**One SUPER IMPORTANT TIP: the package says that it only takes like 2-3 minutes to shrink all the way… I timed the shrinking and at 2 minutes the shrinky dink paper was curling up and looking like it was completely ruined so I panicked and tried various ways to flatten them- DON’T DO THAT! Just trust and leave them in there for about 5-7 minutes and they will go from completely curled up to completely flat and gorgeous. If you take them out early all curled up, don’t worry, just stick them back in and they fix themselves!
I cut the shrinky dink paper into fourths and used a hole puncher to punch holes before baking and it was the perfect size. I also made some super cute customized cat keychains! My students and I used colored pencil for the pictures and then I spray painted theirs to seal. Put clear nail polish on top of mine and that works too. So easy and looks great!
